NextGen Dialogue – Building a Career with China in a Changing Global Environment

So, you wanna work in China?

Earlier this month, our Chair Joyce Zhuo joined the New Zealand China Council's NextGen Dialogue as co-chair, bringing together young professionals from Australia, New Zealand and China to explore what building a career with China looks like today.

A few themes stood out from the conversation:

🔄 China related careers are becoming a two way street. Chinese companies are increasingly investing and partnering in New Zealand and Australia, particularly in clean energy, advanced manufacturing and electronics.

🗣️ China expertise means more than speaking the language. Professional skill, curiosity and adaptability matter just as much.

📈 A changing economy brings new opportunity and new complexity. Shifting consumer behaviour and evolving regulations rewords those who can bridge different systems.

💬 Adapting to different ways of working is its own professional skill, with WeChat blurring the line between business and personal communication being one example raised.

🌏 Building China capability starts with people. Study, exchanges and staying connected all count, none of it requires a permanent move.

The overall mood was one of cautious optimism, with the next generation set to combine professional expertise with curiosity, adaptability and the ability to build bridges across markets and communities.
