This year Port Adelaide and the Gold Coast Suns made history by playing the first Australian Football League match in Shanghai, China. ACYA’s Cormac Power spoke with Andrew Hunter, Port Adelaide’s China Manager, about the power of sports diplomacy.

Jointly supported by the Australian Embassy in Beijing and the Foundation for Australian Studies in China (FASIC), ten lucky New Colombo Plan students and Australia China Youth Association (ACYD) members will be sponsored to attend the Fifth FASIC Conference 2017, from 1-3 November 2017 at Jiangsu Normal University in Xuzhou.
Participants provided a 300-word comment on the theme of one of the below topics in relation to the Australia-China youth space (in English).

What impact does transnational connectivity have on Australia-China relations?
What is the relevance of transnational connectivity in the current world?
Essays should be sent to gm_china@acya.org.au by October 17th. The result will be released on October 20th on Australia Global Alumni: China’s LinkedIn page and the winners will be notified via email.

No, this isn’t in response to another complaint by a beleaguered politician that Chinese investors are buying up Australian property and inflating prices state-wide. It’s a little harder to visualise, but my article, the one you’re reading right now, the one you may have typed an address into your URL bar to access, exists within a different kind of domain. A domain that all Internet web pages exist inside. A ‘TLD’, a.k.a. Top Level Domain.

ACYA is offering 3 scholarships to study at the National Taiwan Normal University Mandarin Training Centre (NTNU MTC) during their Winter Term (Dec 1, 2017 – Feb 27, 2018).

This is a fantastic opportunity for ACYA members to continue their Chinese language and culture studies in one of Taiwan’s most prestigious educational institutions. MTC has drawn participants from around the world, including former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

(English) ACYA Guangzhou President explores regional relationships through Model APEC Conference

On the 17th of August, I arrived in Yangzhou, to a conference that would pivot my understanding of relationships in the Asia Pacific. It was the MODEL APEC, and before all the nerves, excitement and joy that were to come, a feeling of severe under-qualification was the first emotional order of the day. The students who came from around China had won multiple competitive rounds; their knowledge of APEC and diplomatic eloquence of speech had been tried and tested. Meanwhile, I slipped through the doors with a reserved ticket for ACYA members. Never mind though, because, on the second-day corporate clothes, chandeliers, a big horseshoe table, and cameras that moved across the ceiling filled me with a buzz that was enough to steal my attention from myself.

Economists and business people alike have been hailing praise for the China Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) since it was ratified in late 2015. The free trade agreement is set to reduce tariffs on Australian exports to China as a way of trade liberalisation designed to benefit both countries. Essentially under the agreement, it has become cheaper for Australian businesses to sell in China and cheaper for Chinese consumers to buy Australian products.
