The University of Queensland Chapter has had an exciting start to semester two...

On Wednesday UQ held its bi-annual Market Day, as part of which the UQ Chapter was able to expand its membership base by 80 to a total of 350. For the event, Sabrina Lee, one of UQ’s Vice-Presidents, worked hard to secure ACYA polo shirts for the Executive. These shirts will be used to further promote ACYA at UQ (and, as you can see from the accompanying image, they don’t look too bad either).

The UQ Chapter also began semester two by conducting a preliminary survey of Chinese students to further understand the habits, concerns and interests of UQ’s Chinese student population. The results will be distributed within the ACYA community as well as UQ bodies dealing with international students and student welfare, the ultimate goal being to help improve the lives of Chinese students at the university.

The UQ Chapter is keen to build on a very successful first half of 2010.

Over the course of the first semester, the Chapter strengthened its relationship with the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies by agreeing to jointly host a weekly conversation class, commencing with a calligraphy session in week two. Additionally, the Chapter has developed a relationship with the Business, Economics and Law Faculty and their ‘Say it in English’ class, which will directly follow ACYA’s conversation class.

As well as establishing connections with like-minded student bodies at UQ (such as the UQ Chinese Society), the Chapter is starting to build on its local sponsorship base to help subsidise possible events such as a karaoke night, Great Wall of China rock climbing day or hosting a guest speaker.

Unsurprisingly, O week has shown the UQ Executive and the Sino-Australian community of UQ that we are keen to further develop ACYA in semester two.
