Secondary Schools


ACYA is made up of many active young Australians who are enthusiastic about the promotion of Chinese language learning in secondary schools across Australia. As a part of our pilot initiative, the Engaging China Project, a number of speakers will be available to deliver presentations to high school students about how the learning of Chinese has enhanced their personal and professional goals. Project Objectives

The objectives of the Engaging China Project are as follows:

  • To promote the value of Asia-literacy to students in Australian schools.
  • To encourage students to sustain their commitment to learning Chinese throughout their VCE/HSC/IB and university studies.
  • To offer practical advice to students on the resources available to them to improve their Chinese language skills.

ACYA endeavours to accomplish these objectives by running a series of presentations at high schools across Australia. The presentations will be run by articulate China-literate university-age students who are enthusiastic about relating their experiences of learning Chinese and travelling/working/studying in China to a high school audience and who can present as positive role models for younger students.

The content of the presentations includes, but is not limited to:

  • Why study Chinese?
  • How can knowledge of Chinese help with your career?
  • What are the ways of going about improving your Chinese?
  • Which gap year and university programs can assist in the learning of Chinese?
  • What scholarships are available for students to go to China?

Logistics

The content of presentations shall be designed by ACYA in consultation with the individual school in question. Presentations at high schools will involve 1-2 ACYA speakers and can be arranged for a length of time suitable to the school.
