Moderated by Helen Zhang, an Asian Studies (Specialist)/Law student at the Australian National University, the ANU Chapter of ACYA hosted its second public lecture on the Coalition’s policies for creating a more Asia-literate Australia. This event featured the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, The Hon Julie Bishop MP.

Ms Bishop spoke to ANU students and general public attendees about the direction of the Australia-Asia educational relationship, stressing the importance of increasing third track links and encouraging student exchanges between the two continents. She also advocated increasing funding for teaching exchanges to create more Asia-literate teachers for the future.

Ms Bishop spoke engagingly before taking a range of challenging questions from the audience concerning the Coalition’s response to the Rudd Government’s handling of the Stern Hu affair and other diplomatic issues in the news over recent months. The Sino-Australian relationship was hotly debated and Ms Bishop participated in a welcomingly candid discussion with the audience.

The forum was followed by an opportunity for students to mingle with Ms. Bishop before she had to return to Parliament House for sitting.

ACYA would like to thank Ms Bishop for generously volunteering her time.
